Photography In The Time Of Covid

Throughout the lockdown my emotions have, like most other peoples I guess, swung wildly from anger to fear to contentment to boredom to rage and lethargy. It has been a hibernation I didn’t expect or want, but I’ve used the time to experiment with processing styles, admire the work of other photographers, and consider the place of photography in my life.

When the virus was first starting to spread throughout the world, I made a decision to stop my photo shoots until it was safe to do so. Even though its rare that I get closer than 1.5 metres from a model, it just seemed the right thing to do given people were losing their lives, businesses and employment. Anything I could do to help stop the potential spread of the virus, however small the chances, is something i decided i must do.

After the easing of the lockdown rules, I recently completed my first shoot since January and to be honest I felt really rusty. Creative photography is a muscle that, in my case at least, needs to be exercised regularly.

I’m slowly booking more shoots, tentatively easing my toes back into the water, hoping that a second wave of the virus doesn’t eventuate. I’m thinking about doing a few road trips and to get out and explore the world again.

I can’t wait til things start to feel normal again and we can all begin to take the little things for granted as usual.
